We have to use our legal dictionary and find the most common definition of the acronym. Once we know the definition of the acronym we can search for the acronym in other areas of the law, usually precedents, or review them for good definitions.
There is a good chance that your answer will not be found in the dictionary. So you have to use the word game. In this post we will talk about this process of finding your answer.
So what does an acronym mean? An acronym means a person or thing that is called a short form for an easy to remember but longer term name. Examples include the names of many legal technical terms such as: FREEWRITING (First Amendment Right to Petition the Government), AFFIRMATIVE DEFENSE (right to plead “Not Guilty”), FIRST AMENDMENT (a right to free speech), and many more.
But how do you use acronyms to find an answer? Well, let’s first recognize acronyms are not synonymous with words. You can’t just say the word “right” and find a definition of “right” in the dictionary. You have to look up “FREEWRITING” and look up “Petition” to get the answer to your question.
